July 24, 2008 Because I leave for the States in a little over a week, this will likely be my final blog entry during my stay in Ethiopia. This weekend I will be busy finalizing my assignments, orienting new project consultants, visiting with local friends, preparing for my reentry to the US … well, you get the idea. It is therefore fitting and proper that my final entry in Africa be on Gratitude. I will refer to gratitude as both an experience and expression of my own being that has evolved considerably for me over the past 6+ months.

July 5, 2008 For those of you have inquired, I am fine. I have not been able to add to my blog for the past several weeks due to work and illness, both of which have caused distractions and delays in my reflections and musings. Flu and fever two weeks ago kept me in bed much of the weekend. And, weekly meetings with the Board of Directors have required preparation that extends beyond the normal five-day workweek. Next weekend, a group of us will be traveling to an ecolodge near Lake Langano for two days. Consequently, I won't be making a blog entry next week either. Hopefully, I will be writing an entry on Sunday, July 19th, two weeks from now and two weeks prior to my return to the US. In the meantime, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so check out my latest set of pictures of Ethiopia at http://tpoling.spaces.live.com Stay tuned! TLP |

June 15, 2008 Ok, this is the week I’m going to let it fly … bitching and complaining about everything that drives me crazy here. Lest you think I’m really losing it, I want to preface my entry by saying that I remain committed to the cause and am glad that I am here. The good continues to outweigh the bad by a ratio of 100 to 1. But like a small pebble in your shoe, after almost 5 months, the 1% has become so noticeable and annoying as to warrant comment. Also, by taking note of the 1%, it allows me to appreciate the other 99% all the more … the topic of next week’s blog entry. But for now, come join me as I cry in my soup. I’ll ask that you excuse the hyperbole. And, of course, all pity will be accepted.

June 8, 2008 I am back to the blog. Well, sorta. Extra weekend work, approaching deadlines, illness and fatigue have made it difficult to find the time or energy to write my blog entries over the past couple of weeks. Although I am making an “entry” this week, most of the credit goes to Amy, the daughter of my Addis housemate, Don, who was visiting with us for approximately 12 days late last month. Prior to her return to the US, she wrote a letter to her family and friends recounting many of her thoughts and impressions of Ethiopia and its people. It was so well written, and offers such a rich commentary on one’s experiences here, I wanted to share excerpts of it with you. With Amy’s permission, I offer you the following …
